Ballsy New Ad Campaign From Philips

Product site for the Philips Bodygroom (Flash). Winner of a Cannes Gold Lion award, and pretty damn funny concept.

Tip: Be sure to click on "The Basics" and then "Women prefer a well-groomed man, right?"

Ben Hopson

"This website describes my work to create greater aesthetic unity in the design of products, which I began as part of a Master’s Thesis in Industrial Design at the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, New York.

My goal is to add beauty and interest to products by investigating the different ways that movement can be designed. While designers have numerous techniques and tools at their disposal to improve the appearance of objects, when it comes to creating ways for objects to move through space, designers are often at a loss.

To remedy this problem, I have developed methods for sketching kinetic concepts and a working vocabulary to discuss them. What you will find recorded here are my initial investigations into this approach to product design."

Spammer’s grandparents allow AOL dig

File this one under "What the fuck?"

----

The grandparents of former neo-Nazi Davis Wolfgang Hawke have given permission to America Online to search their outside property in Westwood for gold that the spam-meister Hawke may have buried there.

Robert A. Davis, Hawke’s 90-year-old grandfather, said he just didn’t want a protracted legal fight with AOL that would sap him of time and money - and so he has agreed to let AOL bring radar and sonar equipment on his land to determine if there might be gold bars underground.

“Let’s just say I don’t like it,” said Davis, emphasizing he won’t let AOL into his home where he and his ailing wife live. He also said he won’t let it dig up his lawn.

“It’s rediculous,” added Llewellyn Davis, Hawke’s grandmother, referring to AOL’s legal pressure to search and possibly dig up their yard.

AOL was supposed to show up yesterday to begin its search, but apparently had equipment problems, Robert Davis said, adding he didn’t know when AOL workers might show up.

AOL, which last year won a $13 million judgment against Hawke and co-spammers, believes Hawke may have buried gold and plantinum bars on Davis’ property, as well as at his parents’ house in Medfield.

Hawke, who’s known to have purchased about $351,000 in gold and platinum bars from a Boston dealer, made millions on his email spamming schemes before he disappeared after AOL slapped him with a lawsuit.

Hawke’s mother, Peggy Greenbaum, was still defiant yesterday, vowing to fight AOL’s attempt to search her Medfield home.

“I’m getting angrier and angrier,” she said.

An AOL spokesman couldn’t be reached for comment.

Halloween Party

Nikole and I are thinking of having a big Halloween party. We were just going to have it our place and ask that everyone dress up.

Anyone up for it? We're also open to ideas... or invitations to other Halloween parties. We really just want a reason to get dressed up.

A few blog notes

1. I generally make all the links in my blogs open in a new window... I figure you use the blog as a launch pad for links. However... I generally find pop-ups annoying. What do you guys think? New window or not?

2. I'm also thinking that it might be about time to redesign this template. I'm open to suggestions, if I don't hear from any one I'm just going to go ahead and start experimenting on my own.

3. I'm thinking of moving the blog over from Blogger to Wordpress. Check it out and let me know what you think.

4. I think it might be a good idea to open up the blog to more people. Generally I'd like to keep it to artists of on sort or another, but really anyone interesting with something to contribute should be welcome. Agreed?

The Art of the Shiv

Interesting post over at Design Observer on the Shiv.

Google Analytics

I've had a google analytics account for a while but I've never done anything with it. I though it might be fun to hook it up to the blog to see what kind of traffic we're getting and to see what the analytics tool can do.

If anyone is interested in checking out the stats, send me an email with your Google accounts email address. It doesn't necessarily have to be a gmail account... just an email address that's been set up with a google account.

Designers Make Great Entrepreneurs

Who's coming with me? Really, this time...

Join us at DWR Boston for a lively discussion of Business and Philosophy as we welcome Stephane Barbeau and Duane Smith, founders of Vessel, a cutting-edge product design studio based in Boston. Smith and Barbeau will speak to "making it" as a creative person in the business world and how they incorporate elements of design development into their overall business practices. Additionally, Barbeau and Smith developed Release 1, Vessel's conceptual arm that explores and pushes the boundaries of design philosophy. Refreshments will be served.

Camping with Gogol Bordello

Gogol Bordello (NEKMF 2006)
Aug 5, 2006 - 35 Photos

I had the opportunity to see Gogol Bordello (up close and personal) at the Vermont NEKMF (Northeast Kingdom Music Festival). I took these shots as practice for event/concert photography, which many photogs would say is *the* most difficult type of shooting - maybe besides underwater photography. Even though I still need practice, and I do not (yet) own the right lenses for this type of environment...I don't think the images turned out that bad. Click on the photo above for a sample of some of the better shots.
