Flash Scroll Bar

Today I was working on a project and I needed an easy to skin, easy to resize, easy to use flash scroll bar for text. Nothing fancy… surprisingly I couldn’t find anything of the sort.

Way back in the popstick days me and my good friend memo wrote some simple scroll bar code that works really well. It does not include features like easing or scroll arrows (whatever you call those buttons at the top and bottom of a scroll bar).

But… it does meet my requirements listed above… easy to skin, resize and use.

To resize the scroll bar, just make the objects inside the movie clips whatever size you want. To target a text field select the scroll bar and type in the name of the text field in the actions panel. There are a few other variables that you might want to adjust but they’re easy to figure out. If you have any questions, email me.

10 Ways

I've been seeing this on Getty but I never bothered to click on it.

5 companies collaborated with Getty images to come up with 10 ways to explore/interact with images.

Some are good, some aren’t.

Jackalsmith International

A truly horrifying piece of web "design" for my friend's clothing company. I managed to figure out how to make the site all updatable via blogger's interface, which I'm pretty excited about. It's pretty easy do do, so long as you can get it looking like you want it to.

Montessori

I am building a site for my favorite aunt Sue's Montessori school website! I think I might be getting a little too excited about cute kids and lots of color... what do you guys think?

Here are the quick comps that I made this weekend

Gnarls Barkley - Crazy

Misha pointed out this very cool video for "Crazy" by Gnarls Barkley (a collaboration between Cee-Lo and Dangermouse). I think they might have the dumbest band name ever but maybe I'm just missing something.

As you can see from the image it's based on a Rorschach inkblot test concept and it's directed by Robert Hale, who has done work for Nine Inch Nails, The Donnas, Jet, and Stereophonics.

the Quick

My friend Jason is working on a little music magazine, called the Quick, whose focus is the transcendental/spiritual/brilliancy of music itself... Many of the bands he will be writing about/interviewing are (as he says) "Down with the G-O-D"; but not so much a limitation as the concept allows him to talk to anyone and shapes editorial how he analyzes and considers their music...

In any case, I am trying to come up with a really quick black and white concept for him — steven is going to do some element illustration (maybe for titles, maybe to differentiate sections/features) to give it something a little more unique. I like the titles and the little arrow/pixel pattern so far — but I don't love the actual article text here (I think it would be nice to differentiate what is article text from what is "about the magazine text"; hence, the combined use of helvetica and mrs. eaves).

Tyger

“’Tyger’ is a short film directed by Guilherme Marcondes.

Every year, Cultura Inglesa (an educational branch of the British Council in Brazil) funds a few cultural projects for their festival. This orject was one of the three selected for 2006’s edition. The only request was that your work should somehow reference British culture. I chose William Blake’s poem “The Tyger” as a starting point.”

You Are Beautiful

I probably got really excited and showed this to you all a couple of years ago, but I love this idea... Take a general message and somehow make it personal — and get them placed all the world over... Plus, doesn't it make you smile? (don't be a sourpuss...)

You Are Beautiful

Miranda July

A promotional video for Final Cut Pro featuring Miranda July and her editor talking about making “Me and You and Everyone We Know”. The video quality on these clips are amazing. How do they do it?

Also from Miranda is this cute website, which Ann pointed out to me, called “Learning to Love You More”. She posts little assignments for people to do which I assume are supposed to help you love you more. After you’ve completed the assignment you send it in and they post it. I haven’t actually done any myself but it’s fun to read/look at what other people are doing.

New Member

I've invited my lovely wife to join our little blogging world.

Recently she's been getting into graphic design by making posters, business cards and menus for her business associates. Nikole is in love with making fun shapes in Illustrator. Frankly, I'm a little jealous.

She's also been devising all sorts of wonderful plans for potential business ventures. Hopefully she'll share some of her ideas with us if we promise not steal them!

Everyone say "hello".

Identity Works

A good place to read up some of the thinking behind corporate identities because unfortunately sometimes it's not completely obvious.

The rest of the site is also really interesting and useful.

Covering Teen Wolf:One Coach's Guide

Covering Teen Wolf:
One Coach's Guide.

BY PASHA MALLA

- - - -

Used to be, the key to beating Teen Wolf's Beavers was just to play them on any night there wasn't a full moon. We were unlucky one season in that we met them 28 days apart, both times in their barn, and Teen Wolf destroyed us—64 points in the first game, then a quadruple-double in the second, with 14 blocked shots and 25 steals. Our third matchup, though, we were fortunate enough to have a 76 percent waxing gibbous, so it was regular Scott Howard, who turned the ball over twice before fouling out, scoreless, in eight minutes of play. These days, however, it seems the guy can change over whenever he wants, which poses a real problem to opposing coaches. What follows is the best strategy my staff and I have come up with to limit Teen Wolf's effectiveness on the court. While admittedly far from foolproof, it will, hopefully, prove useful to your team. We're all in this together, folks.
